Midweek Missed Connections: “Last Sunday”

If you read my post from last Friday, you know all about the Supplicium Post Mortem blog and its Flash Fiction Friday challenge. Well, now the blog’s owner, Casey Morgan, has added a similar writing exercise for Wednesdays: Midweek Missed Connections. You can follow the link and read the whole premise behind the challenge, but for those of you who are too lazy, the basic idea is to write “a piece in the style of Craig’s List Missed Connections detailing not only who you were and who he/she was, but also what was running through your mind as you watched your target, or after you parted.” As with the FFF challenge, there is a 250-word limit. Also, a suggested setting is given each week; this week’s setting was church. Here’s my entry for this challenge:

LAST SUNDAY

To the Young Lady in the Pale Green Dress During Sunday’s Sermon – m4w – 36 (Downtown)

I saw you in the third pew on the right, and you caused lustful thoughts within me at Mass last Sunday.

You were new there, I know; otherwise, I would have noticed you before. Every time I glanced your way, you were looking at me, and I could see what you were thinking behind those emerald eyes. I wanted to speak with you afterward, but you dashed out like the fires of Hell were at your heels. Was it guilt? Don’t feel ashamed; even in church, we’re still only human.

Were you having the same thoughts I was? It was difficult to focus on the sermon; I kept imagining myself peeling off that dress and caressing the delicate skin beneath. I imagined the taste of your full lips as I kissed you and ran my hands through your silken sable hair. I must admit, I imagined the taste of another part of your body as well, and what it would feel like to penetrate you. Forgive me if I’m too forward; I only say this because I’m fairly certain you felt the same.

If I am wrong, then feel free to ignore me, but if I’m right, then don’t run away next time. If you can work up the courage to talk—and maybe more—I’ll be waiting for you in my office in the rectory.

  2. Oh, fantastic twist, LOL! I so enjoyed this. I really didn’t imagine church could be such a hot prompt! I also liked the authenticity of the listing header – wish I’d done that.

  3. That was really good.
I didn’t expect it to get as graphic as it did, being set in a church, so that was a surprising turn.

I really like this sentence – “I wanted to speak with you afterward, but you dashed out like the fires of Hell were at your heels.”
The way I was reading it in my mind, it sounded like a monologue, such as the various ones in the Max Payne video games, or in Sin City, which fit that sentence very well.

    I like it.

  4. Travis this is genius! I really enjoyed reading.

  5. I absolutely loved reading this. You created such great imagery in such a short number of paragraphs.
    The ending was so clever.

  6. Wow, what an ending – Father Murphy should be so lucky

  7. Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I’m glad you enjoyed this first foray into Midweek Missed Connections. Come back again next Wednesday for more. :)
